BLYTHEVILLE, AR - A large number of employees were laid off from Tenaris Hickman Steel in Blytheville and two other facilities in Texas, according to a news release from the company. Tenaris laid off approximately 500 employees Friday who work at two facilities in Texas and at the Blytheville mill.

Opponents of Big River Steel mill defend suit against plant
Opponents of a new steel mill under construction in eastern Arkansas argued in a court hearing Friday that they didn't forfeit their right to sue to stop the plant just because the state had already issued a permit. "You cannot simply take a document and write 'permit' on it and say, 'That's good enough for us,'" Nucor Steel attorney David Taggart argued during a federal court hearing in Little Rock.

Arkansas man accused of possessing knife on JCC campus
City police charged Marshall D. Stults, 26, of Blytheville, Ark., with fourth-degree possession of a weapon after he was accused of possessing a knife in his vehicle. Police said Mr. Stults had a Whitetail cutlery dagger, measuring 12 inches in length with a double-edged blade measuring about 10 inches, in the driver side door pocket of his vehicle.

BLYTHEVILLE, AR - A Region 8 business manager ran off three suspects who tried to rob his business on Wednesday night. According to a news release, officers were called out to the Domino's on North 6th Street at around 9 p.m. for an aggravated robbery.

Iron worker hurt before clocking in eligible for comp
An Arkansas iron worker who slipped and fell on ice before clocking in for the day is entitled to workers compensation benefits because he had already donned his personal protective equipment, the state Court of Appeals ruled Wednesday. Ronnie Nabors was employed as an iron worker in Blytheville, Arkansas for Continental Construction Co.

BLYTHEVILLE, AR - The case against a teen charged in the death of Gosnell girl will not be prosecuted, according to documents from the Mississippi County Circuit Court. An order of Nolle Prosse by the State of Arkansas in the case of Christopher Sowell was granted Wednesday.

Federal lawsuit targeting steel mill is dismissed
A federal judge on Wednesday dismissed a steel company's lawsuit against a rival, saying it couldn't use the court system to bypass state regulators who had already given the rival permission to build a new mill. U.S. District Judge Leon Holmes ruled the lawsuit by Nucor Steel seeking to halt construction of a Big River Steel mill in Osceola is not authorized under the citizen lawsuit provision of the federal Clean Air Act.

Blytheville considering repayment plan for sanitation debt
BLYTHEVILLE, AR - The city of Blytheville is considering a plan to repay the state tax sales that its trash and sanitation services have failed to pay since 2004. The Jonesboro Sun reports that finance director John Callens, along with Mayor James Sanders, are negotiating a deal with the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration to repay a debt of about $970,000.
