National Guard targets 8 armories in state for closure

The plan calls for readiness centers, commonly called armories, to be closed in Berryville, Blytheville, Brinkley, Crossett, Helena-West Helena, Rector, Walnut Ridge and Wynne. No personnel would be cut because of the closures, said Arkansas National Guard spokesman Lt. Reactions were split, he said. McCormick said the Crossett Police Department would take over the old armory. "We have some plans, but you still hate to see it close because of what the Guard stands for and what it means to this state and our country," McCormick said.


Jonesboro church hopes to stop the violence through prayer rally

JONESBORO, AR - A Jonesboro church is working to stop the violence after multiple shootings over the weekend. Last week, Greater Dimensions World Outreach Ministries was in Blytheville for a prayer rally and march. However, while Pastor Turner was in Blytheville for a march Saturday morning, Police in Jonesboro began investigating the first of many shootings that would happen over the next four days. Pastor Turner said his church has planned a prayer rally will take place Friday, May 26 at 6 o'clock at Allen Park in Jonesboro.

JONESBORO, AR - A Region 8 school did a great job in a recent competition. Their winning problem performance was titled Toilet Trouble. Greene County Tech place 15th in the Problem 1 Runaway `Train' Division I. Blytheville Middle School placed 41st in the Problem 1 Runaway `Train' Division II. Blytheville Middle School placed 15th in the Problem 3 Pandora's Box Division II. Blytheville Elementary School placed 7th in the Problem 4 Lose Your Marbles Division I. Osceola Peak Program III placed 29th in the Problem 4 Lose Your Marbles Division III.

WALNUT RIDGE, AR - The Arkansas Army National Guard wants to shut down 8 armories across the state, and 5 are in Region 8. Blytheville, Walnut Ridge, Wynne, Rector, and Brinkley are all on the proposed plan to shut down armories because of budget cuts. Snapp said Adriana's would just be one of the many to see an impact if the armory were to close. The National Guard is set to present the proposal to Governor Asa Hutchinson in Little Rock Thursday. City leaders were told they should know by the end of May if their armory will close.

PEMISCOT COUNTY, MO - A Blytheville, Arkansas man received serious injuries following a crash on Interstate 55 southbound on Saturday. According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, it happened just after 9 a.m. about five miles south of Hayti in Pemiscot County, Missouri. Police say Anthony Jackson, 48, was airlifted to a Memphis hospital. His Ford Explorer ran off the right side of the on ramp, he overcorrected and was hit on the driver's side by a tractor trailer. AR National Guard to return 7 armories to host communities

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Seven armory buildings will be returned to their respective communities later this year. The Arkansas National Guard announced Tuesday in a new release the readiness centers, or armories, affected are in Berryville, Blytheville, Brinkley, Crossett, Helena-West Helena, Rector and Wynne. The facilities and properties are scheduled to be returned to the host communities before the end of September. However, the property will be offered for sale to the heirs of the original property owners. No jobs will be lost in the move.

BLYTHEVILLE, AR - Chuck Wilder always had a hand in organizing one of the coolest parades of cars, trucks, foreign cars and motorcycles in Blytheville. The "Cars and Cycles against Cancer" fundraiser brought together car enthusiasts from a multi-state area. This year, "Cars and Cycles against Cancer" joins the North Mississippi County Relay for Life on Saturday, June 6 at the Arkansas Aeroplex in Blytheville. The event is free to all entrants. Arkansas will conduct its first summer camp of the year Saturday, and several in-state and out-of-state prospects will be trying to earn a scholarship offer. " I'm going up there on business and business only," Crockett said. "I know one the main things they want is to see me run my 40 again," Crockett said. Among the schools that have offered scholarships are Arkansas, Iowa State, Louisville, Kansas State, Illinois, California and Duke. Kouassi has been granted a release from Kennesaw State in Georgia and will be eligible to play next season.

"I'm more than upset, and I feel like they are pushing me to the point to take action myself," Shirley Miller said. Shirley Miller's son, Dewaun, was shot and killed back in May in Blytheville. Javandar Williams surrendered to police days later and is charged with 1st degree murder. "I want something done about those young men in that car that drove this man around to kill my son," Miller said. Dewaun Miller was walking down Clark Street in Blytheville when police said Javandar Williams shot him. "He was stalked," Miller said.

BLYTHEVILLE, AR - A Blytheville man will spend more than a decade in prison for his role in a Blytheville drug ring. According to a news release from the Department of Justice, Kenneth Brown, II, was sentenced to 151 months in prison for his role as the leader of the drug conspiracy. "The citizens of Blytheville will not have to deal with these 11 individuals, who were bringing drugs, guns, and violence into the community, for many years," Thyer said. They were sentenced in 2014. The 2nd Judicial Drug Task assisted in the investigation.

The New York Times has a colorful little story about a debate in Mississippi County over the possible closure of the courthouse in Osceola, thus consolidating county functions into its counterpart in Blytheville . A group in Osceola is fighting to keep their courthouse open. That was supposedly the case in Franklin County, where I grew up . But Mississippi County has no such excuse. The only thing between Osceola and Blytheville is I-55 and the bad blood of a mismatched football rivalry .

Police investigating 2 shootings in 2 hours

BLYTHEVILLE, AR - Blytheville police are investigating two shootings that happened with two hours Thursday night. At 7 p.m. officers were called to the 500-block of South Sixteenth. A crowd of people in the area also refused to answer the officers' questions about the shooting, Adams said. Davey Rainey, 28, was laying in the doorway of an apartment with multiple gunshot wounds. Rainey told police the shooting took place behind the apartment, but he would not identify the gunman, Adams said.

BLYTHEVILLE, AR - Police in Blytheville responded to a shooting Friday where two men were injured. Captain Scott Adams said officers were called to a report of two people being shot on June 19 in the 300-block of Walker Street. Officers found Robert Alexander, 25, with a gunshot wound to the face and Alvin Rogers, 26, with a gunshot wound to the leg, according to Adams. Both men were taken to a Blytheville hospital. Alexander was later flown to a Memphis hospital. Their condition was not released, nor any suspects arrested.

- Blytheville police are investigating two recent killings in the city, along with four other shootings during the past week. Two men died after shootings 11 hours apart on Monday, and officers were trying to determine whether the incidents were related. After a shooting about 10 a.m. Monday, officers responded but found only the victim, who died later at the Great River Medical Center. Harold Ott is the founder and primary researcher of Psych of the South, a record label dedicated to unearthing rare Arkansas pop history. The star of the group was Tommy Jones, a natural on the drums at the age of 11. Chessie Jones, the owner of an auto repair shop in Osceola, was the stage dad behind the group as well as their manager. Tommy's older brother Doug, 13, played bass, along with Ricky Handley, 13, and Bruce Senter, 15, on guitar. And the Fourmations are crammed in and break into song. Their Liberty 45 was released in March of 1967.

BLYTHEVILLE, AR - Police are investigating two deadly shootings in Blytheville while a community feels the violence has to stop. A teen was shot and killed on Clark Street in Blytheville. Friday, June 19th, officers responded to another shooting on Walker Street in Blytheville. Monday, 2 more deadly shootings were added to list of violent acts in the town. "We've had 5 to 6 shootings, killings, in the last 5 to 6 weeks," Blytheville resident Curtis Smith said. Both Slaughter and Smith said prayer is how their community must begin to heal.

Blytheville police arrest 2 men on capital murder charges

BLYTHEVILLE, AR - Blytheville police have arrested two men on capital murder charges in connection to a shooting death on Monday. According to Captain Scott Adams, Blytheville officers and members of the Arkansas Community Correction Response Team arrested Randen Caruthers, 18, and Desmond Patton, 17, at around 1 p.m., Saturday. Both are also charged with aggravated robbery and engaging in criminal gang activity. Daniels was shot on McHaney Drive and later died in the hospital. They will be arraigned in the Blytheville District Court on Monday.
